Buying a Used Phone or Car in Ghana: The Questions That Actually Matter

10 October 2026

Most of the general safety advice for buying online — check the seller, don't rush, don't pay a stranger directly — applies here too. But phones and vehicles each have their own specific failure points that generic advice doesn't cover, and those are the ones that actually cost people money.

Buying a used phone

  • Ask for the IMEI before you pay, and check it's not reported lost or stolen — a seller with nothing to hide will give it to you without hesitation.
  • Confirm it's network unlocked if you're not planning to stay on the seller's current network — a phone that only works with one SIM is a very different purchase than an unlocked one, even at the same price.
  • Ask specifically about battery health, not just "does it work" — a phone that powers on fine can still need daily charging by 3pm.
  • If the listing doesn't mention the storage size clearly, ask — "128GB" and "128GB (actually closer to 118GB usable)" are both honest answers, but you want to know before you pay, not after.

Buying a used car

  • Ask to see the roadworthy certificate and registration documents before you commit — not after you've paid a deposit.
  • Confirm the name on the registration matches who you're actually dealing with, or get a clear explanation if it doesn't.
  • Ask directly about accident history and any major repairs — a seller who answers specifically ("rear bumper replaced in 2024 after a minor knock") is more trustworthy than one who just says "no issues."
  • If you can, view and test the vehicle in person before paying anything beyond a small, clearly-agreed deposit — this is one category where buying entirely sight unseen carries real risk.

What to do with the seller's storefront either way

Before you go further on either category, check the seller's Cartly Hub storefront — how long they've been listing, what else they sell, and whether other buyers have reviewed them. A seller who's been active for months with a real history across multiple sales is a different risk profile than an account created the same week as the listing you're looking at.

Keep the order on the platform

Whichever payment path the seller offers — online through Paystack, or arranged over WhatsApp — place the order through Cartly Hub rather than agreeing to a side deal off-platform. For a high-value item like a phone or a car, having an order record with the agreed price, the seller, and the date is exactly the kind of paper trail you want if anything about the transaction needs to be disputed later.
